OFFICIAL SELECTION Academy of Art University Spring Show 2013. A transitional typeface based on the hand lettered cover art of Ian Fleming’s first edition of his Casino Royale novel.

The film is a modern “reboot” and departure from the first Casino Royale film, a satirical adaptation of the first James Bond story by Ian Fleming. In researching the production of the new motion graphic title sequence by designer Daniel Kleinman, I learned that Kleinman took cues from Fleming’s original cover artwork from the 1953 novel in order to bring the new film closer to the author’s original intentions.

This typeface aims to complete Ian Fleming’s cover title hand lettering as a complete set.

It is distinguished by a novel “knot” on several ascenders and an inset highlight, low x-height, contrasting thick and thins, geometric serifs and a vertical axis. This first version of Casino Royale contains 927 kerning pairs, two standard ligatures and one discretionary ligature. It is best used at a minimum of 12 points and excels at headline displays in large sizes.
